About the cover
A girl with white shirt and black dress lies on the ground and picking up the pearl which is running all over the ground. According to Sookan mother’s world “When you facing a difficulty is like making a pearl, Tough times are the times when ones gather one’s pearls.” Therefore the action of the girl on the cover represent the hardship Sookan met in America such as lonely, homesick, illness and the lack of the time. However, she get pass though these difficulties and turns them to pearls. From that we can tell, although her experience in America is not always good she had went though so many difficulties, such as her mother’s death, but these didn’t beat her down. Support by her friends, teachers and her family who cares her in Korea. She pass though that and turn the sadness to the power which support her to stick on her idea of staying in America and seek for her own future, but not just obeying what the elder told her to do. It is also shows how Sookan growing up from a little girl who is nerves of everything around her, feel left out, transform to a girl who has adopt the America culture and live well with it. Although the cover make me feel that this book is going to become a bad ending, luckily the ending is not that bad and she starts to getting better.
