Look back though the year with English II

Walking along the campus, if you see a boy with a black cover kindle on his hand, that is definitely me. Actually, except the time for studying and sleeping, the kindle never leaves my hand. As you can see, reading books is not only an interests to me, but also a habit. Therefore, having a class like English II which requires students to read and understand the book is such a gospel to me. During the year with English II, as the time I improved my speed of reading a book, I also learned to analysis the details deeply and explain about it. Nonetheless, I found several books I liked though this year, and I realized my what my weakness are which I am going to work on in the future.

The way how I read was always left the reading assignment to the last day before I shared my ideas in class; thus I could have a clear mind and a better memory about the book when I talked about it in class. However, the disadvantage for this behavior is the lack of time for your to read, and you need to understand the pages you read in a short amount of time. Luckily, I was born for a fast reader, the experience of reading books on kindle and the preserved of reading everyday helped me to insist. Now, I can announced proudly that I have successfully become a fast and attentive reader!

Then, let’s talk about the book I am interested in. Among the books I have read though the year, I pick two of them as my favorite books which are the story of Marjang and “We Were Lairs”. Persepolis is a book followed the footstep of the growth of an Islam girl; the part that attract me most is that the books tell the story in the form of comics. From the vivid drawings, I felt more fun and helped me understand the complex Islam history easier. It is really a great choice as the first book for us to read. I thought the book “We Were Lairs” was interesting is because the way how writer unfold the story. As you read further, lots of questions will appeared in your mind and the explosive feeling when you finally knew the ending was incomparable. I also really enjoyed to discuss and making hypnosis with my classmate. “ Ms. Guarino I have another hypnosis!” 

Finally, to talk about things I am going to work on in the future, the first thing I need to mention is stick on my own idea; I still remember the time I gave up my answer “drugs “and changed to a name of disease. I will remember it FOREVER! It taught me that I should believe myself; what I really need to work on is pay more attention on small details and put them in series to find out the clue for the mystery. My hypnosis are always close, but never correct. I know that it is not only important to become a fast reader, but also a conscientious reader.

To sum up, English class brought me countless fun and taught me how to become a qualified reader. Although the days with English class has ended, my habits and skills of reading would stay with me. In this summer, I am planning to read the book called “The city of dream books” which is written by favorite writer who write the book called “13 and a half live of captain blue bear”. Like what my grandpa told me: “ reading is a life time work.” My journey with reading never ends!

Interesting story with a strange ending

As I walked past though the big black door of the black box theater, the first feeling I got is a strong dissimilar. I had worked at the black box theater in the winter, so the change took place to the black box theater became really oblivious to me; the classical furniture compared to a spelling stage, the much powerful and cooler lightning, and I never know that the black box theater has such a strong air conditioner. Another thing that needed to be mentioned is-- Lots of couples sitting around me which create a big disturbing. I suggest the black box should separate the seat for couples and singles ! : )

The play began with a loud scary lightening, but didn’t frighten people like me who had already been warned. Then a expressionless butler walked in which creates the exactly right flavor for a murder mystery-- a dark lightning night for murder and a cold depress atmosphere, However, that kind of flavor didn’t last to long; why I forgot that this play is also a comedy! Ms. Flame Fondue successfully using her funny introduction acquired the first laughter for the play; till then the flavor of the play has been changed completely. Luckily, the scream of the actor and how they react when they found out that somebody died proved that this is still a scary murder story..Em..maybe a laughable murder story. After that, the actors start to found out who was the killer while solving the puzzle. Two highlights for me during the play is the mystery hand that turned off the light which I guess is Jack’s hand; also how Jerry and Buzzy react when they try to carry Lucretia, the cook is quite fun for me. I finally know why they turn the air conditioner so cold before the play started, because it was so hot and stivy during the play!

The most strange part I feel about the play is the ending. I can not understand why people act so normal under the gun; I can’t understand that if the Zita Van Zok is so magic and powerful, why didn’t she stop the murder at first; why she clear out the bullet from the pistol by her premonition at first, but didn’t have a premonition to the murder. They give out a lot of evidence and the changes between murders are rolling over and over. However, I think that the ending of turning the murder to frog make me feel that the writer didn’t have a clue to end the play. Therefore he choose to use the mystery and powerful gypsy using her unbeatable magic to end the whole story. 

To sum up, it is a very fun play to watch, except the ending is a little bit crazy to me. The language is fine to me until they start to talk in another language... I recommend people to come and watch the play. Thanks the actor for such a nice show!

In class writing

Three ghost and a girl

Once upon a time, there was a princess who lost her two of her cousins and her boyfriend  in a fire accident. She got hurt during the accident, but luckily she survived.She lost her memories about the accident and got a strange headache which could not be healed; even when the king asked the most famous witch in the kingdom for help. Therefore the king send her away from the kingdom in order to find out a way to help her. Two years later, princess come back to the kingdom and trying to find out the memory she lost, She met the ghost of her cousins and boyfriend. They come to help her and to see her again for the last time...

In my opinion, three lairs are ghost. Cadence start to take drugs and having mental problems since she was in Europe, but the other liars only appeared when she went back to the island. Also, three lairs is helping Cadence step by step to finding out the truth, instead of telling Cadence straight away. They have their own personalities and thoughts and telling Cadence some secrets which she never noticed before. For example, Mirren told Cadence that she's boyfriend is fake and Johnny's Lego tuna fish. After Cadence find out the truth, three lairs achieve their mission and leave cadence just like the story of "the blue younger"; when ghost achieve their mission their must leave. However, the imagination friends can stay longer just like what happened in the book "Pobby and Dingan " which stays forever in other people's lives. Therefore, I think three lairs are not the creation of Cadence imagination or the side effect of drugs. From chapter 82 Cadence said: " before we become ghost" shows that she think that three lairs become ghost after the fire. Three lairs also appeared and gone which is a way of how ghost ends and also they have their personalities, they guide Cadence and is give her advice about how to treat others which are ability imaginary friends and drug have. All in all, I think three lairs are ghost.

React

The principles always appear near the end

A story full of tragedy, innocence, lies, and love, but have to say that the writer grab my heart and use the story as the tool to show me the truth of the reality. How bad the social class is which separate lovers apart; how cruel the greed of money is which divide the family; how dangerous the unrealistic thoughts are which bedevil the whole lives. Luckily, there is still hopes remain; with the unyielding spirit of Sinclair, I am looking forward to see a much better family that acts like a family. Cherish the present, because you can not change the past. 

Like what Cadence said in the book, I wish it was a dream, I wish I could change it, but I couldn’t. Take any of it back(chapter 82). It is too hard for a 17 years old girl to suffered from the death of the one who she loved, and endure the pain of guilty and sorrow. However, we also see the transform of Cadence which change her from a rebellious girl to a girl who care more about families and love them. However, if you can not change the world, you should change yourself. The girl knows that not only for the lairs, but also for people who still loves her she should follow the motto of Mirren’s: “Be a little kinder.” I learned that the payback of being impulsive is the aftermath you should endure.

Compare how Cadence feel about johnny before summer 15th which is snark and naughty with the miss of his not care and not serious words, we can tell that people usually ignore the most beautiful and precious things they always have; when they lost those, they start to remember about how importance they are to their lives. I learned that we need to cherish things and people around us; then you won’t regret when you missed them.

To sum up, I am a person who can barely suffer the sad endings, but I know that life is not always going smoothly. You can only grow up, through wind and rain. I feel grateful and lucky for myself after I read the story, and I know that I must cherish them. Like the end of story, Sinclair family become more beautiful and closer; no matter how hard the problem is, you family will always be your strongest sport.

The memories

From chapter 50 to 70 Cadence starts to remember things which happened in summer 15. For example, a short memory about aunt Carrie with Johnny's wind jacket and looking sad in chapter 55; the swing which they got stuck in in chapter 56; Four lairs set up the fire in chapter 58; how she fell in love with Gat in chapter 61; how she argued with mom about asking grandpa for money and staff in Clairmont; how she found aunties arguing and grandad threaten; how they get adult out of island and fire the house and refuse order.

Open the curtain of a mystery

“We are Sinclairs.” What kind of pain is hiding behind this sentence and covered with glory? I don’t know if it is a lucky for a girl like Cadence-- who is the main character of the book;  as the time she enjoy the benefits of living in a old-money family, she must also learn to hide her feelings under the mask called smelling.

Cadence is a beautiful and quiet girl who always spend her summer holiday with her mother Penny at Beechwood Island in Windemere. She likes to read book and play with a boy called Gat. Because of she is the oldest grandchildren in the Sinclair family, she bear the expectations and heiress. However, from what I know her granddad harries and grandma Tipper seemed loved Johnny more who is there biggest grandchild and the son of Carrie who lived in Red Gate and New York City. Johnny is snark and bounce who has a little brother called will and a friend called Gate. Gate is the nephew of Johnny mother’s new date whose name is Ed. Ed and Gate both have Indian ancestry, so their skin color is dark and have black hair which is really different from the Sinclair family who are white white with blond hairs. However Gate get along well with the Cadence, Johnny and Mirren; Gate have chance to stay in the island is because johnny beg the grandparent to let him stay, and grandparent never say no to johnny. they have been called lairs by the elders. Also I felt a little bit sincere feeling between Gate and Cadence. From how gate act the first time he saw Cadence and how they stay with each other together, but leave the other people. Nonetheless, they are only 14 years old, so they don’t consider this as love. 

Mirren one of the four lairs who is the daughter of Bess. She is a sugar, curiosity and rain girl. She has two twins sister and a sister called taft. They live Cuddledown and Cambridge.

A really important change on Cadence is the leaving of his father. He is a military history professor, he said he can’t stand the life of being a Sinclair, so he leave with some women. There’s connection between the words he said with the title which is her father said he couldn’t smile and lie like a Sinclair. Although, Cadence and Penny feel really bad after father’s leaving, they still smile as a Sinclair, change the things her father left and go back to normal life. Cadence describe her feeling as being shot in chest.

As you can see, that is all the information I get from this book from chapter one to chapter 5. It is a story full of mystery and lies and I am really looking forward to see what is going to happen next, What happen between Cadence and Gate? Why she become sick? 

Some thoughts after reading the book

Destiny made two parallel lines contract and changed their path toward the future. From this book, we experienced with Lorenzo from a autism and stubborn boy turning to a bay with care; who also can and look forward to live as normal people and make friend with them. However, all of this which could be called as big changes took place at a small cellar. Olivia the catalyst and the major reason of why these changes happened. To tell you the truth, I don’t like a ending like that in book; I look forward to a happier ending which is usually happen in fairy tales. Nonetheless, just like the story Lorenzo told to his grandma. In the true world things could happen and end without any reason. “All good things must come to an end” If you can not disagree, you must learn to enjoy it. After years of trying, I get used to these kind of endings. This is reality.

My 30 Day Challenge

I have three ideas of the 30 days challenge. After pondering for a long period of time, I choose to write a poem every day. In my opinion, poem is a way of express your emotion and feelings. For example, when I walk along on the way to the class in the rain; listen to the sound of rain drops and feel the rhythm of the spring breeze. The sights I see stirs up my feeling and I need a way to release this. Therefore, write a poem become a best choice for me. However, I don’t have a habit as writing poem, so I want to try this as my 30 days challenge and change myself.

Summary of the twist

Lorenzo's day start with a scary phonecall which is actually from his step sister but not his mother. She come to the cellar to find the staff she have before she left. Although Lorenzo try as hard as he can to hide, he is still found by his stepsister. She soon notice that Lorenzo afraid of other people to notice where he is hiding, so she use this to threaten Lorenzo to let her stay in the cellar for one night. Also Lorenzo found out some secret from his stepsister's staff and there's a connection gradually found between he and his stepsister.

Lorenzo's sister

From the book, we know that Lorenzo's sister is 23 years old. She was a very beautiful girl two years ago. However, now she become too skiny, sick and homeless. I think she is a very sel-important girl. We can see from she reject the help from her father. She has a really bad relationship with her father. Also she is a really smart girl. She use the weakness of Lorenzo and let her get into the cellar.

A short reaction

The book starts with a 24 years old man's flash back about a "skiing plan" happened ten years ago. To tell you the truth, it doesn't  attract any of my interests from the first several page about a 24 years "old" man. However, it starts to get exciting and interesting when the young man decide to skip the skiing plan and go back to his house by himself without telling anyone. He hide in the basement with everything he prepared to spend his whole weekend. It starts to become interesting to me because I like stories with twist and adventure, but not telling a story in one order. As you can see, I think this book is not boring at all!

A Fantastic Show

“At 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee, my parents keep on telling me~~” As the familiar the song being sung, I know my experience at drama in winter season is done.I walk straight to the stage, bow and listen to the compliment and encouragement which is given to all the people who participate in the show from my English, Writing and Drama teacher--Ms. Guarino; At that time, I conjecture I am going to have the feeling of free and being released; I can spent my lovely afternoon in my doom to read and playing with my laptop. I don’t need to spend anymore time in the black box theater where I used to get out of as soon as my work is done. However, an opposite feeling appears like flood crash though my heart. It is a feeling contains sadness, regret and reminiscent. Maybe I am not ready for the end of the show which comes too quick and pass by me before I notice. 

Although I never have chance to watch the show completely, from the corner of the backstage, every time during the practice I know every part of the show; I remember the order of the songs and I even can sing with it. Therefore, I have the rights to make a comment of the show. In my opinion the show is perfect, everyone participate in it try as hard as they can to make it perfect. My job during the show is selling food during intermission and changing the background scene for act two. It sounds easy, but I want to say that it is really cold to sit in front of the door in Gym at night and you should have a nimble hand to change the scene before the audience see you. Also I am in charge of carry food and music instruments to the black box theater. Though all the part I have done in drama, my favorite part is helping actors practice as an audience member. I need to spell cow and dance in the song called “Pandemonium”. It is interesting to me to see how actor react to the world I got and the feeling of attending is also good to me. To talk more about this play, I want to say that it fits perfect to a saying which is “Ten minutes of stage, stage takes ten years.” What behind the fantastic show is all the time and passion we spend in the play, so I clap every time at the end of the play and give a thumbs-up and high five after the actors get out of the stage. 

The only things I feel bad about the show is, we should have more number of times to perform at least more than three. During the show I ask Andrew how he feels about the end of the drama season. He told me that he is happy to have free time in the afternoon, but also the sadness which we only perform 3 times. I can tell it is best show I have ever had in my life, although I only participate in one show :). Clap for everybody who participate in the show!!

Research about the Show

The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee is found by Rebecca Feldman and the lyrics and music is composed by William Finn. It is a long one-act musical comedy. The show is about a fictional spelling bee. There are 9 main characters in the show and with 3 to 4 audience members to help the show keep going on. The main characters are Rona Lisa Peretti, Douglas Panch, Mitch Mahoney, Olive Ostrovsky, William Barfée, Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre, Marcy Park, Leaf Coneybear, Chip Tolentino. In the first part of the show the audience members will be called to attend the show and they will join the spelling and dancing in the show. They will be given both hard and easy words to let the show going on, such as fandango and cow; these word will let the speller sing several songs such as “Pandemonium”. When the spellers or audience members spell something wrong, the cheer leaders will come up and sing the Goodbye song and let them get out of the stage. During the songs there are going to be dancer dancing around; the speller will also dance and sing when is their chance to spell, such as “I am not that smart” and “I speak six language”. Finally in the end of the show, after winner of the spelling bee comes out, speller will come out one by one and give information about the future of their characters. All the actor including stage crew will come up to the stage wave, bow and dance to the audience. It is a big chaos. These are a short summary of what is going to happening in the show base on the practice I see as a stage crew. It is a really fun and interesting show which also have a strong interactivity with audience. It also get several rewards such as “Drama Desk Reward” and “Theatre World Reward” It is a really good show and suggest everybody come and enjoy it!

Final Draft???

The flower blooming in the snow

When I first saw this book, I thought it must be a sad story. In the middle of the cover you an see a girl lying on the floor and picking up the pearls which are all over the place on the ground. It even makes me imagine that the girl on the cover is being bullied. However, after I read though the book, I found out that this a story about the growth of a determined Korean girl--from a girl who only knows to obey orders to an independent young women. From the cover of Gathering of Pearls, the first thing you can see is a white background which represents the influence of Korean culture, but the pink flowers in the snow represent the influence of American culture ;Despite the difficulties she faces, she continues to become stronger and stronger, just like the flowers blooming on the cover. 

The first time Sookan comes to America, It is obvious that she is completely a Korean which is shown by the white background on the cover.For example, she feels strange and embarrassed when she sees people kissing and hugging in the airport. Also holding hands with a boy or choosing who to marry is unbelievable to her. The only goal for her at that time is study as hard as she can and go back to Korea to become a nun as her sister does. Therefore, her life and future has been planned already by her elders. Korean culture is like a big cold hard wall which separates her from American culture. We can see how nervous she feels when she attends the meeting the first time; she just wants to become part of the students but not the distinguished one who is really different. This is a contrast to the later time which she feels well when somebody nominate her as a student leader. The Korean culture creates lots of obstacles  on her experiences in America, and they are difficulties on her way to moving forward and getting better. However, there is a saying that “Do in Rome as the Romans do.”so she decides to adapt the American culture Although  Sookan’s sister is always warning her about how important it is to keep Korean culture, it only make Sookan want more freedom and question about her future. The cold wind of winter comes rapidly with the endless snow. Is the tender flower going to survive from the ruthless winter? 
As we all know winter is always going to pass and the snow will melt, so the tenacious flower will finally experience the warmth and welcome a vivid spring.

Plum blossoms defying frost and snow, all the limits that come from Korean culture will melt from snow to water and become the nutrition to help the growing of the flower. The American culture represents the flower blooming in the severe winter. As we all know that “A single spark can start a prairie fire.” It is irresistible when Sookan conect with the American culture; from her action of coming to America along without listening to the advice from her sister, we can see that she looks obedient, but in her mind, she is a stubborn girl with her own idea about her future. After she talks with her best friends Marci and Ellen and listens to their decision about their future, Sookan starts to question all the orders that her elders such as her sister give to her. She is not sure if being a nun is really what she wants. Being a teacher can also help others and get married at the same time;If Ellen’s advice encourage  Sookan to finding her own pass to the future, mother’s death and her letter encouraged Sookan to be keen on her way of life and believe that she is right. We can tell that mother is the people who really understand Sookan in her family. Sookan must rely on herself after her death. However, trouble can never beat Sookan down; She learns how to be independent from the American culture and mother’s world of “Tough times are the times when ones gather one’s pearls.” gives her support. After she get rid of the blocks and limits from Korean culture’s influence, trouble only makes her become stronger. When the little bud blooms completely, summer is coming.

To sum up, the cover gives a introduction of what is happening in the book; we can see the conflicts between American culture and Korean culture from the cold white background and the blooming flower. It not only shows a formidable experience of a Korea young girl but also help to understand the meaning of mother’s world which says that trouble won’t just bring the sadness and hardship but also forming the preciousness pearls. We should know that ”With out a heavy rain, the rainbow will never exist."

The flower blooming in the snow

While the first time I saw this book, I think it must be a sad story. It even make me imagine that the girl on the cover is being bullied. However, after I read though the book, I find out that this a story about the growth of an strengthen Korea girl--from a girl who only knows to obey order to a independent young women. From the cover of Gathering of pearls, the first thing you can see is a white background which represents the Korean culture which limits Sookan, but the pink flowers in the snow represent the influence of American culture ;Despite the difficulties she faces, she continues to become stronger and stronger, just like the flowers blooming on the cover. 

The first time Sookan comes to America, we can tell that she is totally a Korean. She feel strange and embarrassed when she see people kissing and hugging in the airport. Also holding hand with a boy or choose who to married is unbelievable to her. The only goal for her at that time is study as hard as she can and go back to Korea to become a nun as her sister dose. Therefore, she’s life and future has been planned already by her elders. Korean culture is like a big cold hard wall which separate her from American culture. We can see how nervous she feel when she attend the meeting at the first time; she just want to become part of the student but not the distinguish one that is really different from the later time which she feel well when somebody nominate her as the student leader. The Korean culture creates lots of block on her experience in America, and it turn out to the difficulties on her way to moving forward and getting better. However, there is a saying that “Do in Rome as Rome dose.” Although Sookan’s sister is always warning her about how important it is to keep Korean culture, it only make Sookan want more about freedom and questioning about her future. As we all know winter is always going to past and the snow will melt, so the tenacious flower will finally experience the warm and welcome a vivid spring.
